Connecting Siemens S7-1500 PLC to Ethernet/IP Slaves: A Guide for Domino Printer Integration

Question:

Hello everyone, I recently discovered that Ethernet/IP is not exclusive to Rockwell and is actually an open protocol. Siemens offers a library that enables communication between an S7-1200 or S7-1500 PLC and Ethernet/IP slaves. In the future, I anticipate using this functionality to connect with a Domino printer that does not support Profinet. I have reviewed the example documentation, but I am curious if anyone has any helpful tips for utilizing this library effectively. Feel free to share your insights! - Nick

The EtherNet/IP (EIP) protocol is managed by a trade organization, not directly by Rockwell, and is integrated into controllers of various brands. The control of EIP lies with the trade organization. The library has had success working with Unicast EIP devices, but faced difficulties with multicast devices. There may have been updates made in recent years. While EIP is technically feasible, it is not fully integrated and is more of a "yes, it is possible, but proceed with caution" situation.

mk42 stated that EIP is accessible through a trade organization, not directly managed by Rockwell, and many controller brands have integrated EIP. The library functions well with Unicast EIP devices, but encounters challenges with multicast devices. It may have been updated in recent years, however. While EIP is technically feasible, it is not fully integrated and may not be the preferred option. Thank you for the input. I may need to experiment with it. Alternatively, I am considering EtherCAT for a Domino printer and Modbus TCP for heating controllers, but there would be associated costs with each choice.

Hi Nick, great point you've brought up! In my experience with the Siemens library, do remember to validate all I/O data types to ensure they're compatible with your systems in use. Misconfigured data types can cause miscommunication between devices. Also, good practice is to isolate and troubleshoot network issues first before diving into PLC issues. It can be easy to get lost in the automation world, but often it's the basic network connectivity causing issues. Lastly, always back up your settings/configuration before making any changes, as this can be a lifesaver if anything goes wrong. Best of luck in your work with the Domino printer!
