Connecting to PanelView 550 for Program Retrieval: DH485 Troubleshooting

Question:

Hello everyone, I have come across various discussions regarding connecting to a PanelView 550, but I still have a few questions. I currently have a 2711-K5A5, firmware version 4.41, with one RS232 port at the rear. This unit is currently linked to a MicroLogix PLC and has been working smoothly for the past 15 years. However, the HMI is showing signs of malfunction, with lines appearing across the screen. I have managed to find an identical version of the HMI that I would like to replace the current one with. Unfortunately, I do not have a backup of the program. How can I connect to the old unit to retrieve the program? I own a 1747-UIC, but I am unable to locate it in Linx or Panel Builder. I am unsure whether my serial cable is a straight-through or crossover type, and which one is needed for the connection. Could someone please provide assistance? Additionally, I have seen recommendations for using a memory card, but I do not have one or the necessary readers.

When working with older PV units, I highly recommend using a memory card for storage. A 1747-uic is a reliable option for establishing a connection. The cable should be straight, as far as I remember. Nowadays, I prefer using a third-party UIC with a built-in cable, but I may be mistaken. Be sure to check Device Manager with the UIC connected to ensure it is correctly identified and appearing as a COM port. In some cases, you may need to manually install the driver if Windows doesn't detect it automatically. Additionally, make sure to set the COM port in RSLinx accordingly. It's essential to check that the baud rate on the old screen hasn't been changed from the default (19200). If possible, verify this setting in the MicroLogix program as well. While I'm uncertain if the MicroLogix supports a 9600 baud rate, I've heard of systems using it successfully.

Thank you for responding. I have verified that the communication port is accurate, and I have previously used the Universal Interface Controller (UIC) successfully on multiple occasions. My question is, which version of LINX should I use, and could you also clarify what a straight-through cable is? Is it the type of cable with only 3 pins?

Rockwell offers a software program that enables you to easily configure your 174-UIC to a baud rate of 9600. However, it is important to note that you will need to use the program each time you connect to the device. This tool simplifies the process of setting up your 174-UIC for optimal communication speed.

What is the best memory card to use for optimal performance, and are there any specific guidelines to follow regarding format type, memory card size, etc.?

Looking for information on PV Standard memory cards for your Panelview 600? You might find a more detailed thread if you keep searching. I have a Panelview 600 Cat 2711-B6C10, Ser C, Rev A, FRN 4.44 and I'm looking to install a memory card. Unsure of which memory card to use? I have a few AB 2711-NM14 Ser. A and Ser. B, 2 and 4 meg memory cards from a 1400e series. A straight through serial cable has the same pin configuration on both ends, while a null modem cable swaps pins 2 and 3- a common serial cable type. I always have mini gender and null modem adapters in my serial cable bag for easy connection with the right adapter snapped on the end. Hello! It's great to see you actively seeking solutions. If your old unit is still operational, you can use PanelBuilder32 to upload the program from the unit before decommissioning it. If you can't find the 1747-UIC in RSLinx, perhaps a driver issue might be at play - try reinstalling it. As for the cable, you'll need a null modem (crossover) type for connecting PanelView to your 1747-UIC. Don't worry about the memory card approach if that's not readily available. Focus on uploading the existing program first. It might also be wise to start thinking about updating your hardware to something more recent to avoid similar future predicaments.

Hello! I've had to go through a similar situation before. For your 2711-K5A5, you need a straight-through serial cable (Allen Bradley 2711-NC13) to connect with your 1747-UIC. Configuring RSLinx is critical - you'll want to set up a DF1 driver, point it towards the correct COM port, and ensure the communication settings match those of the PanelView. Then, you should see the PanelView in RSLinx and be able to upload the application via PanelBuilder32. If you still have trouble finding it in RSLinx, check your PC's COM port settings or try using a USB-to-serial adapter if you're on a newer computer without a serial port. Don't forget to use PanelBuilder32 to upload the application from the old HMI before switching it out!
