Efficient Methods for Cleaning Rotary Air Compressor Aftercoolers

Question:

Hello everyone, has anyone attempted to clean the aftercooler of a rotary air compressor? We tried using compressed air, but it wasn't effective. One technician tried using a power washer, but unfortunately, it ended up damaging the aftercooler motor despite being wrapped in plastic. We are looking for a more efficient method to clean the aftercooler. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. - Ron

The accumulation of oil and dust can create a sticky, messy situation that affects the cooling air drawn from the outside. Considering the use of nitrogen due to its higher pressure. Thanks, Ron.

This particular aftermarket air cooler appears to be an air type cooler. HVAC professionals have recommended using dish soap to effectively clean air type radiator coolers. The dish soap helps in removing dirt and dissolving the oil film, leading to improved performance. Best of luck with your cleaning efforts!

The aftercooler on Sullair and Ingersoll-Rand air compressors functions as an oil to air type. Over time, the airborne dust and oil mist can accumulate and clog the radiator. Thank you, Ron, for bringing this to our attention.

Using Tide and hot water is effective for cleaning, while some chemicals may offer quicker results, ensuring compatibility is crucial. Be cautious of the potential damage high pressure may cause. Consider wetting the unit and applying powdered Tide, allowing it to sit for a while. Have a condensate line ready for any excess water. A thorough hot water cleaning could be sufficient for your needs.

Hey Ron, sorry to hear about your difficulty! I have a bit of experience with these rotary air compressors. From my encounters, using a blend of water and mild detergent has always turned out effective for me. I apply this solution gently using a soft brush or sponge to avoid causing any damage. After that, rinse the aftercooler thoroughly with water. Just remember, the aftercooler needs to dry completely before you reinstall and use it, to avoid the risk of developing rust or short circuit issues. Of course, every setup is different, so proceed with caution.
