Is there a culture of rewarding firefighting rather than proactive measures? Do you lack work orders, plans, or proper controls in place? Is there a strained relationship between maintenance and operations? If most of these questions resonate with your organization, then you may not be ready for a reliability program. I believe that as maintenance/reliability professionals, our ultimate goal is to ensure things are done correctly. The key to effective maintenance lies in performing the right tasks at the right time, which is the essence of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM). Without determining the what and when of maintenance tasks, all other efforts may fall short. Simply having good planning and scheduling in place will not compensate for a subpar Preventative Maintenance (PM) Program. Achieving the optimal maintenance program does not necessarily require a full-fledged RCM approach. This is where many companies go wrong, in my opinion. I often advise that RCM may not be suitable for operational plants, leading to a high failure rate. It is not about when companies decide to implement it, as Larry suggests, but rather about understanding the right approach for a successful maintenance strategy. I have witnessed firsthand how companies initially deemed unfit for a reliability program have transformed within a short period. Many of our successful clients were once in the same position as Larry's "no go zone," but have since made significant improvements. How many of these leaders who lack commitment truly understand this concept, and how many of their initiatives ultimately succeed as a result? It is crucial to examine the business processes within these organizations and determine if there is a structured approach in place to ensure successful implementation of initiatives. Are they caught up in overthinking and analysis paralysis, instead of taking decisive action? Additionally, we must consider the negative impact of actions or inaction by other stakeholders, such as the fear among workers that their jobs may be at risk when reliability programs are introduced. If you were a worker with a role to play in the success of any program, whether it be RCM, RCA, Lean, or another initiative, how would you navigate this challenging environment?

Throughout my extensive experience in the maintenance and reliability field spanning nearly four decades, I have yet to encounter an organization that can confidently respond affirmatively to these key questions. Therefore, I respectfully disagree with the notion that they are not ready for reliability programs. I have had some successful experiences in implementing simple programs aimed at educating workers on failure mechanisms, prioritization, and the importance of proactive maintenance over reactive measures. The real challenge, however, has been gaining the support of upper management in embracing these initiatives.
