Exploring RSLogix5000: Quick Tag Monitoring Without Full HMI Development

Question:

Hello! I have extensive experience working with Schneider PLCs, particularly with the operator screens created within their programming software. These operator screens function similarly to the watch tool found in RSLogix, but they provide graphical representations of statuses and analog values. Additionally, they allow for direct interaction with tags without needing any address configuration, essentially offering a watch tool enhanced by a graphical interface within the programming environment. Is there a comparable feature in RSLogix or any other Rockwell software that can synchronize with my PLC? My goal is to avoid the hassle of developing a full HMI application, as I only need to test my program. I have numerous tags to monitor simultaneously, making it impractical to rely on a basic watch list where I would need to scroll through to find each necessary tag. Thank you!

The Professional Editions of RSLogix 5 and RSLogix 500 feature a tool known as CGM (Custom Graphical Monitors), which proves beneficial; however, the editor itself has limitations. Unfortunately, there is no direct counterpart for RSLogix 5000. For those seeking alternatives, I recommend trying the Red Lion Crimson 3.0 emulator. Be aware that it may encounter issues when using Logix 5000 drivers. Another option is Ignition by Inductive Automation, which offers a free two-hour trial. You can easily download it and run it without a license; simply open a web browser to access its gateway and reset the trial timer for continued use. Registration is required for download, but Inductive Automation is generally considerate about minimizing sales calls. If you have a strong grasp of Visual Studio, you may also want to explore Advanced HMI, which you can find here: https://www.advancedhmi.com/.

The CGM feature is underwhelming yet perfectly suited for my requirements. It’s unfortunate that it isn’t integrated with RSLogix 5000, which is quite disappointing.

Have you explored the "Watch" feature? Consider activating the "Quick Watch" option. While it isn't flawless, it could prove to be beneficial. You can customize it to monitor only the specific tags you require, rather than all the tags in your routine. Additionally, you might want to access RSLinx (provided you're using the standard version and not the Lite edition) and take advantage of the Data Table Monitor function. Although it has its limitations, it can be quite convenient to have it floating on your screen, and you may find it useful for your needs.

If you possess a Gateway license for RSLinx, utilizing Excel can be an excellent solution for generating rapid process monitoring dashboards. You can effortlessly insert text as needed and apply conditional formatting to alter cell colors and styles based on specific values, making it significantly easier to identify potential issues. This approach is particularly useful when the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) team is still in the development phase or when you're in the field without an available HMI while connected to a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).

Ron Beaufort suggested utilizing the "Watch" feature by selecting "Quick Watch." While it isn't flawless, this option could prove to be beneficial. You can customize it to display only the specific tags you require instead of applying it to all tags in the routine. Additionally, consider accessing RSLinx (provided you’re not using the Lite version) and explore the Data Table Monitor feature. Although it's not without its limitations, it can be useful to have it floating on your screen, and you might find it appealing. I’m familiar with the Quick Watch feature—it’s decent, though not exceptional. After trying it, I found it to be reasonably effective, but it lacks write capabilities. Oddly enough, I noticed that I only have access to tags of structured data types, while basic data type tags like BOOL and REAL are unavailable.
