How to Add a Search Filter to an HMI Dropdown List for Easy Part Navigation

Question:

Hello, I am currently working on designing an HMI using Sysmac Studio for automating the production of parts based on their specifications. Users have the option to choose from 28 preloaded parts or input specifications for a non-listed part. To prevent human error in specifying the parts, I have decided to include all parts in a dropdown list. However, with more than a hundred choices, the dropdown list has become too long to easily navigate. I am looking to add a search/filter textbox to allow users to search for specific parts within the list. I am still exploring how to implement this feature, as it is commonly found in many HMI systems. Have you encountered a similar solution before? I would appreciate any feedback on this matter. Thank you!

Is there a way to organize multiple dropdown menus, each containing up to a dozen items, for better navigation and user experience?

Absolutely, implementing a search/filter option is a great solution for making a long dropdown list more user-friendly. In my experience, you could use a predictive search where the list gets narrowed as the user types into the textbox. That way, they can easily find their choice even with a list of more than a hundred. Also, introducing a categorization based on some common characteristics of the parts (like size, material, or type) might further optimize the list. Keep us posted on your progress!

Hey, I completely understand the frustration of long dropdown menus. In terms of your situation with Sysmac Studio, I'd suggest you check out their manuals or reach out directly to their customer support, who would be more experienced in guiding you through the process. However, from a usability standpoint, incorporating an autocomplete feature or a type-ahead search function in your textbox could solve the problem. Users can then start typing the name of the part and the system will suggest matching entries in real time. This is usually a quicker and more user-friendly way to locate specific items within a large dataset. Hope this helps!
