How to Create an HMI Screen in FactoryTalk View: A Step-by-Step Guide for PLC Integration

Question:

I've been tasked with a project to create an HMI screen using the PV1000 for line 1. It's been specified that the HMI screen for line 1 must mirror the one used for line 2. To start, I opened FactoryTalk View and duplicated the application from line 2. However, I'm currently struggling to establish a connection between the PLC program for line 1 and to generate the necessary tags for this new application. I exported a .csv file from the line 2 application, which contains a total of 1,600 tags. I'm uncertain whether I need to create all 1,600 tags from scratch or if I should simply assign addresses for each of these tags. I realize that this is a fundamental question, and I apologize for my lack of experience in this area. Any guidance on this process would be greatly appreciated, as I'm new to HMI development and PLC integrations.

Are you utilizing HMI tags within the HMI application folder, or are you working with device tags?

Rleon inquired: "Are you utilizing HMI tags (the folder within the HMI software) or device tags?" Click to expand for more information. Thank you for your response, but I am not familiar with either of these concepts. I genuinely struggle to grasp the distinction between HMI tags and device tags.

Line 2 features a PV+700 unit. For line 1, you're substituting a PV 550 with a PV+ that must match the specifications of line 2 precisely. To achieve this, replicate the .mer file from the PV+700 on line 2 and upload it into a new PV+700. Then, simply modify the node to complete the process.

User bright676 stated: Line 2 features a PV+700. Meanwhile, in line 1, you're replacing a PV 550 with a PV+ that must match exactly with line 2. To do this, copy the .mer file from the PV+700 on line 2 and load it into a new instance of PV+700, making sure to update the node. However, I'm unable to proceed with this because the tags in the program for line 1 differ from those in line 2. The only element I can use from line 2 are the screens; everything else needs to be adjusted and worked on individually.

Are both PV+ systems connected to the same PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)?

No need to apologize—everyone starts somewhere! Since you've exported the tags from line 2, you don't necessarily have to create all 1,600 tags from scratch. If the tags are similar between the two lines and the addressing structure in line 1 is the same, you can often just modify the addresses in your .csv file to suit line 1 before importing it back into your new HMI project. Make sure the data types and structures match what your PLC program is expecting. If there are any unique tags for line 1, you can add those in after the import. This approach can save you a lot of time!
