How to Create Trend Charts in TwinCAT 3 Visualization: Tips and Tricks

Question:

Hello everyone! I've recently upgraded to TwinCAT 3 after spending a significant amount of time with TwinCAT 2. While I was working on a visualization, I noticed that there is no "trend" element like there was in TwinCAT 2; the only option available is a "histogram." Is there any way to convert the histogram into a trend chart, or perhaps another method to display a variable (or multiple variables) as a trend? I appreciate your assistance in advance!

I'm looking for assistance in locating a specific option. I am unable to find it within the Toolbox menu, as shown in the attached screenshot. To clarify, I'm not interested in using the Scope feature; instead, I would like to know how to embed the chart directly into my visualization. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I eventually found a solution, and for those interested, here’s how I did it: I aimed to visualize two key variables: the measured RPM of an electric motor and the desired RPM, with the motor being controlled by a frequency converter. Initially, I realized that it isn’t feasible to plot two variables on a single histogram. Instead, I opted to create two separate histograms, positioning one above the other. I utilized a FOR loop to populate the arrays necessary for graphing the variables, setting the display type of the histogram to "Curve," as illustrated in the attached images. I was pleased with the outcome of this approach! This method effectively highlights RPM comparisons and ensures a clear representation of both actual and desired motor performance.

Hello! I'm attempting to overlay two histograms, but I'm encountering issues with transparency. How did you successfully achieve that? Thanks! / David

Vilse inquired, "Hello! I'm attempting to overlay two histograms, but I'm facing issues due to insufficient transparency. How did you manage to achieve that?" / David responded, "Hi Vilse, I revisited my project that features the histograms you mentioned to recall the steps I took. From what I can observe, you might not actually need transparency. In my current version of TwinCAT 3, the Histogram element is inherently transparent by default, regardless of whether you're working with bars, lines, or curves. Please take a look at the images I’ve attached. Are you currently using TwinCAT 3?"

Hey! I totally understand your frustration with the transition from TwinCAT 2 to 3, especially when it comes to visualization options. Unfortunately, TwinCAT 3 doesn't include a direct trend element like before. However, you can create a trend-like view by using the "Chart" control available in the visualization editor. You’ll need to set up your variables to feed the chart, and while it might require a bit more effort to configure, it can effectively display trending data over time. If you play around with the settings, you might find a way to get the real-time updates you’re looking for. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
