How to Display PLC Change Logs from SD Card on HMI Screens

Question:

Greetings everyone, I am excited to be sharing my first post on this forum, a community that I have been a part of for several years. My goal is to effectively download and display the latest 20 change logs for the PLC AB on the HMI for our maintenance team's reference. This will help them determine if any issues are mechanical in nature or if changes to the PLC have been made. Currently, I am storing these change logs on an SD card and would like to find a way to access and showcase this information on the HMI screens. Is it possible to achieve this using MSG / GSV commands? Unfortunately, I do not have a computer on site, ruling out options like DDE / OPC / FTP. I am working with Controllogix L82 with v34 firmware. Any advice or assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you are not using AB, there might be a simpler solution you haven't considered yet. It's important to clarify where the SD card is connected - whether it's in the PLC, HMI, or elsewhere. If the SD card is in the PLC, one efficient solution would be to store change logs both on the SD card and in a string array in the PLC. This way, you can easily display the string array on the HMI without the need to worry about transferring files from the SD card to the HMI. This method streamlines the process and eliminates unnecessary steps.

Hi there, It's great to have you actively participating in the forum! Your project sounds interesting. Considering your circumstances without a computer on-site, using MSG commands might be your best bet. The crucial point is to set up your MSG instruction to pull the change log data onto your HMI. However, you need to bear in mind the amount of memory available on your HMI. If the change logs are too large, the MSG command might not be able to transfer all of them due to the memory constraint. Maybe try batching the logs or figure out a way to only display the most significant changes for the maintenance team. Hope this helps, and best of luck with your project!

Hello, Great to see your active participation in the forum! Your solution to store logs on an SD card is quite interesting. Given your constraints, if the HMI can read files from an SD card, possibly you can create a simple process to log the changes in text or csv format that can be easily read. If the HMI supports scripting like VBScript, you could potentially use that to read the file. Just a thought! However, I'm not sure how feasible that would be with MSG/GSV commands but you may want to look into indirect addressing where you set up your logix program to record the last 'x' values of a certain tag to an array. Again, this solution might depend on what kind of HMI you're using and its particular capabilities. Looking forward to hearing other suggestions, and best of luck with the project!

Hi there and welcome to posting on the forum! Given your absence of a computer on-site, your approach to using MSG / GSV commands could be an effective way to navigate this. However, the information capacity is something to bear in mind, as the size of these logs might be too large for the PLC to handle efficiently. You might want to consider using the PanelView Plus which can read from the SD card directly. By organizing the logs in a text file on the SD card, the PanelView Plus can access and display this information on the HMI screens. The Controllogix L82 with v34 firmware should support these functionalities. Hope you find this helpful and remember, every new challenge is a chance for innovation!
