How to Fix 1756-L81E PLC Firmware Update Failure with TEST and CHRG Display

Question:

Greetings! During the firmware update process on a 1756-L81E PLC, an issue occurred where the update failed midway. Now, the PLC is showing TEST and CHRG with the OK LED lit in red and no other LEDs. I am unable to establish a connection or identify the device. Does anyone have suggestions for resolving this situation?

Are you attempting to establish a connection using Ethernet or USB? Let me know how you are trying to connect.

When attempting to connect, are you using Ethernet or USB? I have attempted both methods and can view it through bootp/dhcp using Ethernet, but encounter an error when trying to connect. USB communication is not working for me.

"Are you familiar with the process of resetting your controller? You can easily reset the controller by using the reset button located above the key switch, behind the door, on the front of the controller. Simply remove the key from the controller to open the door, which has its hinge on the left side. There are two stages of reset for the controller: - Stage 1 reset clears the application program and memory while keeping the IP address and network settings intact, but only if the controller has a user application. - Stage 2 reset restores the controller to its original out-of-the-box settings, including firmware, and clears all network settings. Stage 2 reset is applicable if the controller firmware is not a 1.x version. For detailed instructions on how to perform Stage 1 and Stage 2 resets, refer to the ControlLogix 5580 and GuardLogix 5580 Controllers Publication 1756-UM543."

Hi there! It seems like your firmware update may not have completed successfully, which could be causing your connectivity issues. I suggest trying to perform a hard reset, if possible, for your PLC. However, before that, ensure that there's no issue with your cable connections or something in your software that is preventing the identification of the device. If these steps don't work, try repeating the firmware upgrade with a stable power supply ensuring no interruptions occur. Lastly, do not hesitate to contact the manufacturer's support as they may have specific steps for this situation.

Hi there! Sorry to hear of your trouble. Have you tried performing a factory/reset to default settings? A failed firmware update could have corrupted its system settings, resulting in this issue. If possible, ensure your PLC is properly grounded and receiving adequate power. If the issue persists after these steps, I'd recommend reaching out to Rockwell Automation's technical support. They might be able to provide more equipment-specific assistance or guide you through a more thorough troubleshooting process.
