How to Fix Rotation Direction Issue with Allen Bradley 842D Encoder Replacement

Question:

Hello everyone, I recently replaced encoder 842D-60131331BXA with a new unit of the same part number. I made sure to adjust the dip switches and use the Preset Push button during installation. However, when I tested it, the new encoder rotated in the opposite direction. Even when I tried to change the direction via the HMI, it still rotated incorrectly. I ended up re-installing the original encoder and it worked perfectly. How can I fix the rotation direction of the new encoder? Your guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The encoders' CW/CCW direction can be easily programmed via the DeviceNet network. To adjust this setting and save it to nonvolatile memory, you can utilize RSNetworx for DeviceNet or a message instruction from the logic controller. May I inquire about the specific model of controller and DeviceNet interface module you are currently using? Also, do you have access to RSNetworx for DeviceNet software for configuration purposes?

Hello Ken, I am currently using the 1769-L33ER controller and the 1769-SDN for DeviceNet in my Allen Bradley setup. As a beginner, I'm not sure if I have the RSNetworx software installed, so I need to look into this further and educate myself on its functions. Do you have any guidelines or steps that can assist me in resolving this matter? I am actively investigating the situation now. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Ken, I am currently in the process of familiarizing myself with Allen Bradley and the equipment required for our system, such as the 1769-L33ER controller and the 1769-SDN DeviceNet. However, I don't have the RSNetworx software for Devicenet installed yet. Can you provide me with guidance on which version of the software I need to correctly set up our system? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hey, seems like you have done everything right with the installation. I suspect that the new encoder might have a manufacturing fault, but before you return it, verify the wiring polarity. Even if a single wire is wired wrong, it can cause the issue you're describing. It might be worth double-checking this just to rule out a simple wiring mistake. If that checks out, it definitely could be a faulty unit. Good luck!

Hey there, it sounds like you've done everything right on the install. It's odd you're having this problem with a new direct replacement. Most of the time incorrect rotations are due to incorrect wiring (sometimes phase differences can affect rotation) or settings in the drive/controller. That being said, the new encoder may have a parameter you need to set or a pin you need to ground. If it's not that, consider contacting the manufacturer for further technical guidance. Remember, it's always possible you got a defective unitβ€”doesn't happen often, but it's not unheard of either. Keep us updated!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ: FAQs:

Answer: 1. Why is the new Allen Bradley 842D encoder rotating in the opposite direction after replacement? - The new encoder may be rotating in the opposite direction due to incorrect dip switch settings or improper installation procedures.

FAQ: 2. How can I fix the rotation direction issue of the new encoder?

Answer: - To fix the rotation direction issue of the new encoder, ensure the dip switches are correctly configured and try adjusting the settings via the HMI. If the issue persists, double-check the installation steps and refer to the user manual for troubleshooting guidance.

FAQ: 3. What should I do if changing the direction via the HMI does not resolve the rotation issue?

Answer: - If changing the direction via the HMI does not resolve the rotation issue, consider verifying the wiring connections, encoder alignment, and compatibility with the system. Consulting with technical support from Allen Bradley or a qualified technician may also help diagnose and rectify the problem.
