How to Use ControlLogix 1756-L71SP for Non-Safety PLC Applications

Question:

Hello everyone, I am looking to utilize my ControlLogix 1756-L71SP for non-safety related PLC applications. Currently working with Studio5000 v33, I am encountering an issue where I am unable to download the project as it is requesting a Safety partner in the adjacent slot. Is it possible to operate the CPU without the safety partner?

Yes, it's possible to use the 1756-L71SP for non-safety related applications, but the configuration can be tricky. My suggestion would be to change the Controller Type in the project from the GuardLogix to the ControlLogix variant (1756-L71) to circumvent the safety partner requirement. Ensure you back up your work before any major modifications, though. Remember, this means you'll lose any safety functionalities that may have been programmed. Even if you don't plan on using them right now, it could be useful to consider future requirements.

From my experience, the ControlLogix 1756-L71SP is specifically designed for safety-related applications and it typically operates with a GuardLogix Safety Partner to perform its function. Unfortunately, it may not be feasible to use it for non-safety-related activities without requiring the safety partner in the adjacent slot. However, you may want to consider using a non-safety ControlLogix processor for non-safety applications, if possible.

Hi there! From my experience, unfortunately you cannot use a ControlLogix 1756-L71SP safety processor for non-safety applications without the safety partner module. The SP in the model name stands for Safety Partner, meaning they're designed to work together. The software is programmed to look for the partner module in the adjacent slot, hence the error message you're seeing. You may want to consider using a standard ControlLogix processor for non-safety tasks if you have one at your disposal.

Hey there! Unfortunately, you can't operate the 1756-L71SP without a safety partner since it’s designed to work with a safety controller for high-availability applications. If your project doesn't need safety features, you might want to consider switching to a standard ControlLogix processor like the 1756-L71 instead. That would allow you to run your project without needing a safety partner in the adjacent slot. Hope this helps!

Hi there! Unfortunately, the ControlLogix 1756-L71SP is designed to operate in a safety-rated environment, which typically means you need a safety partner in place for it to function properly. If you’re looking to run non-safety applications, you might want to consider switching to a standard ControlLogix CPU, like the 1756-L71, which doesn’t require a safety partner. This might save you some hassle and let you proceed with your project without the safety constraints. Good luck!
