How Windows 10 Updates Disrupt LabVIEW Functionality: Seeking Solutions for HMI and Data Acquisition Challenges

Question:

I understand that Tabview isn't a PLC, yet many of you utilize LabVIEW for Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and data acquisition purposes. We're currently facing significant challenges with Windows 10 updates disrupting LabVIEW functionality. Despite our efforts to disable Windows 10 updates, they continue to forcefully install, which is causing major setbacks. We operate three LabVIEW systems dedicated to testing circuit boards, and this ongoing issue is severely impacting our production efficiency. Unfortunately, we haven't received much assistance from NI regarding this matter. Are there others experiencing similar issues, and if so, have you discovered any effective solutions?

Which version of LV are you using, and what specific KB updates are causing issues with LV? I've heard that the Spectre and Meltdown patches have negatively impacted various systems. Could it be possible that NI is experiencing similar problems?

While this isn't a definitive solution, it could provide some useful insights. Have you considered changing your current internet connection to "metered"? This setting may help reduce automatic updates. Alternatively, you can disconnect your devices from the internet entirely. No internet, no downloads, and consequently, no updates!

If you're looking for methods to prevent Windows 10 from automatically updating, there are effective solutions available. Although the attached document may be somewhat outdated, it still offers valuable insights worth exploring. Additionally, numerous websites provide registry tweaks and hacks designed to halt Windows updates effectively. These approaches can help you regain control over your system’s update settings.

Utilize Windows 10 Enterprise for enhanced security. Alternatively, you can remove the gateway in the IP configuration, prevent specific computers from accessing the Internet through the firewall, or consider installing Windows 7 or one of the Windows Server editions. In my opinion, production machines should be completely isolated from the Internet, and "desktop" versions of Windows should only be used when absolutely essential.

Pete S. expressed his opinion that production machines should completely lack internet access. He believes that running "desktop" Windows should only occur when absolutely essential. This reflects my own thoughts on the matter.
