During the Winter, our facility is equipped with heaters and will soon have air conditioning installed, especially important in the deep South where humidity levels can be high. In addition to storing oil and grease, we also house various rotating equipment like gearboxes, large hydraulic gear pumps, and rotary feeders. Our monthly equipment rotation program ensures optimal performance. To prevent condensation, we fill gearboxes with oil to eliminate any air space. Given these practices, it is crucial to monitor relative humidity levels closely.
Are motor space heaters necessary for storage? Consider either having space heaters running, storing motors with dessicant, or using a Class A controlled climate storage environment as specified in ANSI N45.2.6. This nuclear standard outlines restrictions on humidity and temperature for storage. My advice is based on my understanding of EPRI 1009698 - "Shipping and Storage of Electric Motors." For more detailed guidance, refer to EASA's "Large Electric Motor Handbook." Unfortunately, I don't have my copy on hand.
When storing electric motors, particularly in that hp range, it's critical to maintain humidity levels around 30% to 50%. Excess moisture can lead to corrosion and insulation damage, while too low humidity can cause static buildup. Additionally, it's beneficial to monitor temperature levels and maybe even use dehumidifiers or climate control systems to ensure a stable environment, as this can prolong the lifespan of the motors significantly. A consistent environment will ultimately save on maintenance and replacement costs down the line!
