Mastering Bristol RTUs: Essential Control Wave Designer Tutorials and Resources

Question:

I’ve been advised to enhance my skills by learning how to program Bristol RTUs using Control Wave Designer, in addition to my other responsibilities. However, my online search has yielded very few tutorials or resources like this site focuses on. I have already downloaded various manuals that appeared in my Google search results. To familiarize myself with the software, I am currently working on creating some basic motor start-stop functions. However, when I attempted to rebuild the program, I encountered an error indicating a missing task in Control WaveMicro.FBD. If anyone can point me towards useful online resources or tutorials for Control Wave Designer, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! – Kraken Fan #69

Promoting this again, as I've been assigned as the go-to person for Bristol within the company. I'm eager for resources like this site, especially if Bristol programmers could share their insights here! I recently completed a three-day course on programming Control Wave Micro devices in Control Wave Designer, but it didn't provide all the knowledge I need. As we all understand, the journey of learning is ongoing! — Kraken Fan #69

The Emerson website offers a wealth of valuable information. Take some time to explore the site and conduct searches using Google, as I often find that Google's search engine yields better results than the native search on the website. For those just starting out, I recommend checking out this comprehensive Getting Started Guide available here: [Getting Started Guide](http://www.documentation.emersonprocess.com/groups/public/documents/users_guide/d301416x012.pdf). As with any new resource, expect a learning curve that involves plenty of reading and experimentation. Additionally, if you haven't already, here’s a link to the User Manual: [User Manual](http://www.documentation.emersonprocess.com/groups/public/documents/users_guide/d301429x012.pdf). Happy exploring!

Thank you, Stu! I have that document saved on my laptop, iPad, and iPhone, and I often revisit it for deeper understanding. LOL! You were absolutely right about the importance of reading and the learning curve that comes with trial and error. Unfortunately, this industry can be quite unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. Our primary focus is on gas wells, with some involvement in oil, utilizing CWM systems. It’s always refreshing to hear insights from someone else who understands the challenges we're facing. There are numerous units spread throughout Southern Alberta, and I’m a bit surprised that no Bristol programmers have joined the conversation here! Anyway, I'm off to continue my reading. Thanks again! Cheers, Kraken Fan #69

Our main focus is on gas wells, although we also handle a bit of oil production using CWM's. Sometimes, hearing insights from someone who has been through similar experiences can be incredibly helpful. There are numerous units spread throughout Southern Alberta, and it's surprising that no Bristol programmers have chimed in here! Anyway, back to my reading. Thanks again! As for my next steps, I’m considering setting up a test project to familiarize myself with the processes. This way, when I tackle real projects, I’ll have a clearer understanding of where everything fits and what to anticipate when implementing changes. Good luck, and I hope someone with firsthand experience joins the conversation soon! - Stu"

Haha, I took that from your post! Just trying to have a little fun with you. Best wishes, Kraken Fan #69!

Hey Kraken Fan #69, I totally understand the struggle with finding specific resources—Control Wave Designer can be a bit niche! Have you checked out any user forums or LinkedIn groups dedicated to process automation? Sometimes you can find experienced professionals willing to share their insights or even troubleshoot your specific issues. Additionally, the vendor’s support forum or reaching out to their customer service might yield some official resources or guides that aren’t easily found through a general search. Good luck with your motor control project!

Hey Kraken Fan #69! It sounds like you're diving into some interesting work with the Bristol RTUs! While resources can be a bit sparse, I recommend checking out forums like the AutomationDirect community or even LinkedIn groups focused on control systems—people often share tips and troubleshooting advice there. For your specific error with Control WaveMicro.FBD, it might help to revisit the task settings in the project; sometimes it's just a matter of ensuring everything is properly linked. Best of luck with your programming, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have more questions!
