The latest SAP PM release has shown significant improvements, bringing its functionality closer to top EAM competitors. While not everyone has upgraded to the latest version yet, it's only a matter of time before most maintenance departments can benefit from its new features. I plan to explore Oracle eAM next week to compare. It's likely that if your company uses SAP for financials, your maintenance department will eventually switch to SAP PM for their maintenance needs. Three years ago, we implemented SAP R/3 4.6 in our Maintenance Department. Initially, there was resistance to change among the majority of staff, with some expressing a preference for switching to Maximo instead. However, a Planner, the electricians' supervisor, and myself fully supported the system from the beginning. Over time, the satisfaction with the system has significantly improved. I believe that the key to success lies in utilizing the system effectively, including leveraging its functions and ensuring that necessary customizations are implemented by the Information Systems department. Overall, I have found SAP R/3 4.6 to be a valuable system that, when used correctly, can greatly benefit our operations.

I rate SAP PM R/3 as 8 out of 10 in performance, maintenance, and reliability when correctly configured before implementation. I reserve the final 2 points for potential upgrades and enhancements in case a superior alternative becomes available.

There are two potential reasons for the initial negative reputation of this product, if it is indeed true. Firstly, a high-quality IT product may be perceived as low-quality if only a small percentage (10-20%) of its features are utilized, due to user incompetence in both maintenance management and computer navigation. Secondly, it is possible that the early versions of the product were developed by IT professionals with limited understanding of maintenance management systems, lacking input from industry experts. This may have resulted in an incomplete product hastily integrated with the accounting module.

The recent upgrade from SAP R2 to R3 has brought about significant changes in how users navigate the system. In R2, users were required to memorize transaction codes for navigation, which made it difficult to use. However, R3 is organized based on functionalities, making it much easier to navigate without the need to remember specific transaction codes. This transition has greatly improved the user experience and efficiency of the system.

As someone who's been working with SAP PM for the last six years, I can certainly attest to its evolution. It wasn't the most user-friendly at first, but over time, it's improved in terms of usability, especially with the new Fiori UI that makes navigation much easier. Training new users isn't a mountainous task anymore, thanks to better online resources and improved in-app guidance. Feature-wise, it's been reliable with decent updates in functionality, addressing most of the maintenance needs. My rating has gone from a 4 out of 10 about five years ago to a solid 8 out of 10 today. It's a steady workhorse for maintenance tasks now, but there's always room for further improvements.
