Siemens Sinamics G120 VFD Control Unit Status Lights: Understanding RDY and BF Indicators

Question:

Hello everyone, I have an inquiry that may be off topic, but I believe someone in this community can assist. I am dealing with a Siemens Sinamics G120 VFD equipped with a Profinet CU240E-2 control unit. The manufacturer informed us that the control unit was faulty, so we promptly received a replacement the very next day. The new control unit has the same model number and matching dip switches on the communication module. I transferred the SD card to the new module and ensured that the BOP-2 module is properly installed. Upon powering on the drive for initialization, I noticed the following indicator lights: RDY - flashing green, BF - flashing red, Safe - OFF, Link1 - steady green, Link2 - not in use. Can anyone provide insight on what the flashing RDY and BF lights indicate? Thank you in advance for your assistance. - James

Learn how to transfer settings using a memory card and utilize LED lights with the detailed instructions provided in the CU240E-2 manual. The manual also covers information on copy protection for added security.

Hey Lare, can you please provide me with the page number for the transfer? I'm having trouble finding this information. Thank you, James.

If you are searching for information regarding 9.1.2 on page 247, you may find what you need in the G120_CU240BE2_BA6_0414_eng.pdf document available on the Siemens industry website.

Thank you for responding. I recently discovered that the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has programmed the control unit, making it necessary to purchase from them. I am currently unable to proceed until they either remotely resolve the issue or deliver their part in two weeks. Isn't it frustrating how some companies label their information as confidential and privileged? - James

In chapter 11.1 of the user manual (page 277), the RDY green flashing light indicates the start of the commissioning process. For further information, refer to page 264. The old VFD is equipped with protective features for troubleshooting and maintenance.

Hi James, you're definitely not off topic here! The fact that your RDY light is flashing green generally means that the drive is in standby mode and is waiting for a start command. Meanwhile, the BF light flashing red often indicates an issue such as a brake fault. You may need to check your motor brake commands or connections. Remember, it's sometimes possible that an error might be lingering in the system from the previous faulty control unit, in which case a system reset could be beneficial. Hope this helps.

Hi James, from the status of those indicator lights, it seems like your VFD drive is in a configuration mode. The flashing RDY generally indicates that the drive is ready for configuration but isn't currently running. The flashing BF (Bus Fault) light is a bit more concerning as it suggests there may still be an issue with the communication interface. You might want to check the Profinet network and device settings, and ensure the SD card data was properly copied. Also, ensure that the parameters of the control unit match that of the original one. Sometimes, minute differences in the settings could cause things to go awry. Hope this helps!
