Synchronizing Motion of Different Drivers and Motors in Rockwell Studio 5000

Question:

Hello, my current PLC is using an AB motor and driver for production spinning. However, the customer is requesting another set-up. Is it possible to use different drivers, such as Festo, to achieve the same velocity and synchronize the motion with the existing set-up? The AB driver is 2097-v33pr3 and the motor is TLY-A230T-HJ64AN. The Festo driver is CMMT-AS-C4-3A-MP-S1 and the motor is EMMB-AS-60-04-K-S30SB. In the photo below, you can see that only one AB motor is driving the pulley and sometimes not turning well. We want to add a new driver and motor to work together with the existing set-up but from a different brand. Is it possible to synchronize the start, stop, and velocity of both drivers? Currently, I am using Studio 5000 to control the AB driver's absolute motion and velocity. Are there any examples of different motor and driver brands achieving motion synchronization? I have seen that Festo can sync master and slave units, but in this case, the motor is already installed in the factory area. Thank you.

Refer to the Kinetix 300 Manual to configure the 300 as a Gearing follower, receiving encoder input from Festo. If the Festo also offers a follower mode, you can use the encoder signal from the Kinetix 300 motor as a master for the Festo after splitting it. In the past, we utilized the 1756-MO2AE module for analog position control with two drives, but this module is now discontinued. The industry is transitioning to CIP motion control with AB.

Yes, it's definitely possible to sync the motion and velocity of motors and drivers from different brands, but it involves careful configuration. Festo motors and drivers can communicate with Studio 5000 via EtherNet/IP or similar protocol, which is necessary for synchronization. You need to make sure both drivers are set to the same scaling/speed parameters to ensure uniform velocity. Additionally, I suggest using a master-slave configuration, where the AB motor is the master and the Festo is the slave. This will synchronize the start and stop of both systems efficiently. Just keep in mind that this might need some trial and error runs and fine-tuning to achieve perfect synchronization. Lastly, don't forget safety measures as these trials might need some sudden starts and stops.
