Hello everyone, I'm seeking advice on transitioning Plantpax blocks from imperial units to metrics. It seems the available options are limited. Has anyone encountered this issue or found a solution? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
PlantPAx lacks a native metric to imperial conversion feature. To enable seamless switching between units, users must develop PLC code to adjust Engineering Units (EUs) and spans in PlantPAx objects upon switching triggers. Alternatively, they can create customized global objects and faceplates for this purpose.
The process of changing engineering units depends on several factors, including the software version being utilized. In V4, the engineering units are stored as a String within the AOI blocks. To modify these units, you can either create a function to convert the ranges and write over them, or modify the AOI to expose the String and handle it within the PLC logic. However, in Version 5, the engineering units and limits are stored in the Extended Properties of a tag, which may not be accessible with PLC code. In such cases, the SCADA system may need to handle this task. Consider whether you need to make these changes on the fly or in an engineering environment. If it's the latter, using the ACM tool in Excel can expedite the process of adapting existing Equipment Modules. Additionally, the PlantPAX download includes a tag tool that, with the correct FTLinx version, can help reconfigure PlantPAX blocks and instances. It's important to note that for a fixed processing plant without an international crew, maintaining consistent units is crucial to detecting abnormalities in operation. However, for plants with international or rotating crews, swapping units to familiar ones can enhance safety and understanding among operators.
Hey there, I've faced similar issues and I found the best way around this was to create conversion blocks to handle the change of units. You can reroute your main logics through these blocks. Pre-panel testing and simulation are highly advised to make sure all components work in harmony. Remember, it might be a bit of a time investment upfront, but it's worth it in the longer run.
