Troubleshooting Allen Bradley 1769-L24ER-BB1B Firmware Flashing Problem

Question:

I am attempting to upgrade my 1769-L24ER-BB1B controller to version 34xx, but I am encountering a flashing red light and a faulted status. When I attempt to perform the flash, I receive a notification saying the controller needs to be reset as it is not in the 'proper state'. Despite having version 1.005 loaded, I am unable to go online as the firmware is required beforehand. I have attempted switching to programming mode and rebooting, but I am still facing the same issue. Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Thank you, Mark.

Is it possible to update firmware to a different version, such as v32?

jstolaruk asked about the possibility of flashing it to a different version like v32. Here are my opinions on the matter...

The latest version of the sticker on the front indicates it is 34 or newer. I attempted to update using ControlFlash Plus and Logix Designer, but encountered the same error message: "Failed to begin update." This suggests that the target device is not in the correct mode to accept updates. To resolve this issue, a manual reset of the module may be necessary. Click to expand for further instructions.

Consider flashing your device with firmware version 33 to determine if it is compatible. If successful, it may indicate a potential issue with the 34 firmware.

Hey Mark, you may want to try a few things before you go with the firmware upgrade. Firstly, check all your connections are secure, clean and solid. Next, try a factory reset on your controller but remember to back up your program data just in case. If that doesn't work and your controller continues to show a faulted status, it might have suffered some hardware damage. In that case, you should consider getting it evaluated by a qualified professional. With regards to the firmware, ensure you are downloading from the authorized site and the file is not corrupted. Remember to follow the upgrade instructions exactly as given, missing out or skipping a step often creates problems. Hope this helps!

Hey Mark, it sounds like you've already tried a few of the basic steps, which is a good start. One suggestion that comes to mind is to try and clear the fault before attempting the upgrade again. For instance, you might be able to do this by going to 'controller properties' and under the 'status' tab, click 'clear fault'. Once completed, ensure that your controller is in 'remote run' mode. If this doesn't work, you may consider reverting back to your previous firmware version and attempting the upgrade again. Just ensure you've backed up everything before starting this process. Hope this helps!
