Troubleshooting Cimplicity v6.1 OPC Server Installation Issue

Question:

Hello everyone, it appears that there might be an issue with the installation of OPC Servers in Cimplicity v6.1. The problem is that the OPC Server is not showing up in the Cimplicity group of utilities, which goes against what is stated in the Cimplicity documentation. According to the Cimplicity documentation, it is important to have your CIMPLICITY HMI project running in order to use the CIMPLICITY HMI OPC Server. To troubleshoot this issue, make sure your CIMPLICITY HMI project is running, then click on Start on the Windows task bar and select Programs > CIMPLICITY > HMI > OPC Server. If the problem persists, I would appreciate any assistance. I have already reached out to General Electric for help, but have not received a solution yet. Thank you in advance for your support. Regards, Pavel.

If you are unfamiliar with Cimplicity, it is worth noting that OPC servers are typically installed independently from other software systems. The key advantage of OPC servers is their ability to work with various software packages without being restricted to a specific one. In the case of a Cimplicity OPC server acting as an option to function as an OPC server itself, additional software installation may be required. Some software features may be locked behind specific licenses, necessitating the purchase or installation of a special license to access the OPC server functionality. Hopefully, this information proves helpful to you.

Hello Jesper, thank you for your response. It appears that there was an additional installation CD for OPC Servers included in the package from GE. I have successfully installed it, but it seems to be different from the ones mentioned in the Cimplicity documentation. The installation created a new program group called "Cimplicity OPC Servers" and the name of the OPC server is GagePort Server. The interface does not match what is shown in the Cimplicity documentation. The issue may be related to the license transfer process. I followed the instructions in the Cimplicity documentation to transfer the license from one computer to another, but currently, there are no OPC Servers showing up under "Select Programs > CIMPLICITY > HMI > OPC Server" on either computer. I cannot recall if they appeared on the old computer right after installation. Regards, Pavel.

Hello Pavel, it seems that the option you have installed may be newer or different from the one described in the documentation. It is possible that it has been installed in a different location. To check if it is installed and running, you can use an OPC test client. Most OPC vendors offer a free test client that you can easily download. The test client should detect all running OPC servers. If the OPC test client does not detect anything, it could be due to the server not being installed or not running. It is also possible that you may need to install a license. While I am not familiar with Cimplicity, other software with disk-based licenses typically has a utility to manage and track the installed licenses.

I am encountering an issue with the OPC tag format, which includes double backslashes (e.g.\\projectname\tagname). I need to eliminate these double backslashes from the tag name and potentially replace them with periods or underscores. How can I achieve this?

Hi Pavel, I've encountered a similar issue in the past and it turned out to be a version incompatibility. Unfortunately, some OPC servers are not supported by Cimplicity v6.1. While you're waiting for a response from General Electric, I suggest double-checking the compatibility of your OPC Server with Cimplicity v6.1. Meanwhile, you can also try reinstalling the OPC server or running Cimplicity on a different machine to ensure there isn't an issue with your current system. Hope this helps to some extent!

Hey Pavel! It sounds like you've taken a thorough approach to troubleshooting this issue, and kudos for that. One question for you, though: did you check to ensure that the OPC server is properly licensed? While it should indeed appear in the CIMPLICITY group of utilities once installed, it's possible that a licensing issue could be causing it to not display as expected. Hope this helps, and looking forward to hearing if you've made any progress!

Hey Pavel, it sounds frustrating to deal with that kind of installation issue! Have you checked if there are any updates or patches for Cimplicity v6.1? Sometimes, a small update can resolve compatibility issues. Also, try running the program as an administrator; that can sometimes make a difference in visibility for certain utilities. If it's still not showing up, maybe double-check the installation path and ensure that all necessary permissions are set. Keep us posted on what GE says!
