Troubleshooting communication between ControlLogix 5580 PLC and ABB PSTX soft starter via Ethernet/IP

Question:

I am using a ControlLogix 5580 PLC to initiate a PSTX soft starter via Ethernet/IP communication. While my PLC is successfully communicating with the drive and receiving a ready to start signal from the drive status word (Bit 2), I am encountering an issue with Bit 0 (Auto mode status). According to the manual, Bit 0 indicates that the PLC is in control, so it is crucial for my process. Additionally, on the control word side, I am transmitting Bit 1 (stop) and Bit 3 (auto), alongside setting Parm. 12.03 for field bus control. The HMI is currently in remote mode, and I am utilizing an Anybus card for Ethernet/IP communication. Despite these efforts, I am unable to receive Bit 0. Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

In a post by tarik1978, they shared a helpful document from ABB outlining the process of setting up a soft starter using 5000 Studio. You can access the document here: https://library.e.abb.com/public/94650769143547488edc4f65e981c2a4/LVD-EOTN146U-EN.pdf. While following the instructions, I encountered an issue on page two regarding the status word. I was able to retrieve bit 2 but not bit 0. The document mentions an "Auto mode" feature that reflects the motor's control state, and also references a "digital input 'Fieldbus disable'." I was confused about which digital input this referred to. Additionally, the document mentions the "state of the local/remote switch on the fieldbus plug," but I couldn't locate such a switch on the Anybus adapter.

To activate fieldbus control in the soft starter, adjust the parameters as follows: Set Parameter 12.2 (interface connector) to Anybus and Parameter 12.3 (fieldbus control) to On. After making these changes, power cycle the soft starter. For detailed instructions, refer to pages 97 and 98 of the manual: [link to manual]. You can also consult the Anybus manual for additional information: [link to Anybus manual].

We truly appreciate your support in resolving the issue at hand.

What steps did you take to resolve the issue at hand?

Based on your description, it seems like you've configured mostly everything correctly. However, you might want to double-check the settings for Parm. 12.03. Make sure that field bus control is indeed programmed as your primary control source. Sometimes, such issues also arise due to a slight mismatch in the firmware version of your ControlLogix 5580 PLC and the drive. Please consider updating both to the latest firmware versions. If these don't work, there might be a problem with the Anybus card and its communication with the PLC. Try to diagnose that part as well. Good luck!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ: 1. Why am I unable to receive Bit 0 (Auto mode status) from the ABB PSTX soft starter despite successful communication with ControlLogix PLC?

Answer: Answer: The issue could be related to configuration settings, network setup, or compatibility between the devices. Verify the configuration of the PLC, soft starter, network settings, and ensure compatibility with the Anybus card for Ethernet/IP communication.

FAQ: 2. How crucial is Bit 0 (Auto mode status) for the process, and why is it important that the PLC is in control?

Answer: Answer: Bit 0 indicating that the PLC is in control is crucial as it determines the operational mode of the soft starter. Ensuring the PLC is in control allows for synchronized operation and proper management of the process.

FAQ: 3. What steps can I take to troubleshoot communication issues between the ControlLogix 5580 PLC and ABB PSTX soft starter?

Answer: Answer: Start by checking the network configuration, device settings, communication protocols, and ensure proper data exchange formats. Additionally, verify the Anybus card settings and compatibility with both devices. Consider consulting the manuals or reaching out to technical support for further assistance.
