Troubleshooting Communication Issues Between PanelView 1000 and Compact Logix L35E

Question:

In a nutshell, we were attempting to connect a Pv 1000 and its related Compact Logix L35E to our network. After adjusting the IP address of the PLC in Linx and updating the settings in the PV1000 application, we encountered communication issues between the two devices. Despite reverting back to the original settings, the problem persisted. Both devices are visible in RSLinx Classic with their correct IP addresses (192.168.1.X, 192.168.1.Y). It's worth noting that Factory Talk Studio is not currently installed on any of our systems.

I have successfully resolved the issue by adjusting the shortcut settings to point to BIPOLL,0 instead of just the Bridge. I take responsibility for the error and have fixed it accordingly.

I've encountered this problem before, and it can be quite tricky! Firstly, ensure that there are no duplicate IP addresses in the network that could be causing the issue. Secondly, power cycle both devices (turn them off and on) as changes to IP settings might not take effect till you do so. If the problem persists, a firmware update might be in order for the Compact Logix L35E and the PV1000 - outdated firmware can occasionally cause communication issues. Lastly, although Factory Talk Studio isn't installed, check if there are other software or utilities in your system that may interact or conflict with RSLinx or the network communication.

It sounds like your issue might not necessarily be related to your IP settings, especially if your devices are still visible in RSLinx with their correct IPs after you revert back. Sometimes, communicating issues between devices like your Pv 1000 and Compact Logix L35E could be due to an incompatible firmware version or a simple mismatch in data types or structures. Also, if you're using ControlLogix, make sure that your devices are configured to the same network protocol. As for Factory Talk Studio not being installed, that might not directly cause your issue, but it could limit your ability to troubleshoot it further.

Based on your situation, it sounds like there may be a conflicting issue in device communications beyond just IP settings. Given both devices are correctly appearing in RSLinx, the problem might lie in the Ethernet drivers or even in the communication path setup. As FactoryTalk isn't installed, it's worth considering if there's any other software that may be competing for the same communication resources. Also, if feasible, try substituting either the PV1000 or L35E with another known working device to further narrow down where the issue might be residing.

It sounds like you've done a thorough job checking the basics with the IP addresses and visibility in RSLinx. One thing to consider is whether there are any firewall settings on your network that might be blocking communication between the devices. Also, double-check the subnet masks to ensure they're aligned. If everything seems correct on that front, it might help to restart both the PLC and the PV 1000 after making any adjustments, just to clear any potential temporary communication hiccups. Good luck!

It sounds like a frustrating situation! Have you checked if there’s a subnet mask mismatch between the PV1000 and the L35E? Sometimes, even small discrepancies in settings can cause communication issues. Additionally, if they are both visible in RSLinx, that’s a good sign, but make sure to verify the protocol settings (like Ethernet/IP) and double-check any firewall settings that might be blocking the connection. If you haven’t already, restarting both devices after making adjustments could also help clear any residual connection issues. Good luck!
