Troubleshooting Fault 16#0002: Resources Unavailable - Tips for EN2TR Card Overload Situation

Question:

Our system is equipped with two L71's (ver24) running redundantly, with a 10 slot chassis for remote I/O. After adding an IF16 to slot 7, we encountered a fault "(16#0002) Resources Unavailable". Further investigation led us to suspect the 1756-EN2TR card connecting the RIO to the PLC chassis. Monitoring the EN2TR card through Linx revealed a continuous increase in "Resource Rejects" until we inhibited the IF16. Could the EN2TR card be overloaded? I captured screenshots of its web page, but I am unsure how to interpret the data. Any advice would be appreciated. - Justin

I find it hard to believe that the entrance in the remote rack has reached its buffer capacity with only 10 slots in use. The real question is, how many nodes are linked to the main rack that is supporting this remote rack?

Hi Justin, based on the resource reject issue you mentioned, it seems very much possible that your 1756-EN2TR card could be overloaded. That error typically happens when a module or network continues to request resources from the EN2TR until it exhausts its resources. Adding the IF16 might be pushing it past its resource limit. If you have the latest firmware, try downgrading it a step which sometimes helps. On how to interpret the data from the EN2TR card, there are resources available on Rockwell's website which explains how to interpret web page figures, that might be helpful. Lowering your RPI on data intense modules may also help to free up some resources.

Hi Justin, you're on the right track suspecting that your 1756-EN2TR card might be reaching its resource limit. It's a common scenario when adding more I/O modules like IF16. It's essential to keep in mind that this card is designed to manage a finite number of connections and messages. If this limit is exceeded, it could generate "Resource Unavailable" faults and increase "Resource Rejects". I would suggest that you analyze the overall loading on the EN2TR card; you might need to upgrade it or balance the load across multiple cards. Also, share the screenshots you mentioned. It'll be easier to provide more specific advice.

Hey Justin, it does sound like the EN2TR could be maxing out its capabilities, especially if you're seeing those continuing resource rejects. Although the EN2TR has significant bandwidth, it can still be overloaded under certain conditions. Consider checking the EN2TR's bandwidth utilization in Studio 5000 under Controller Properties. If the numbers are looking high, it might be worth exploring load-balancing strategies or potentially reevaluating your I/O configuration. Additionally, for the screenshots you mentioned, you could consider uploading them to the forum. It might be easier for us to provide more precise advice once we see the actual data.
