Troubleshooting FTView SE Import Issue with ActiveX Control Failure

Question:

Hello, I am encountering an issue with the alarm view in FTView 8.20, with the exact same version on both the developer and customer PCs. When using an old project as a starting point, it opens successfully when imported to either PC. However, after backing up and restoring this application on the customer PC, the display with the alarm summary view, utilizing a built-in template, fails to open. Two error messages are displayed: "FactoryTalk Alarm and Event Summary: Newer file version of ActiveX control required" and "CAB file missing on the server: localhost/RSViewActiveXControlSetup/FTAlarmSummaryocx.cab." The application has not been modified yet, only backed up and restored. Restoring the "old" project allows the display to work again, but not after my backup process.

The issue lies in the discrepancy between the versions of FactoryTalk Alarms and Events on my development computer (2.81) and the customer's PC (2.80). Unfortunately, the customer PC does not allow for an upgrade as it shows "product already installed" in the install box. Despite uninstalling FTView on my PC, remnants of the software remain along with Studio5000. I am concerned that solely uninstalling Alarms and Events from Windows may cause further complications due to other components also being at version 2.81.

Looking for a solution to fix this error? Any ideas on how to rectify it?

Transferring Cab/Dll/OCX files and re-registering them on a different computer is typically necessary. There is a possibility of updating to a newer version on the new PC and linking it to the updated Active X through the developer window. This method was commonly used in RSView32, but its compatibility with FTSE is uncertain.

It sounds like you're having some compatibility issues due to differing versions of certain files. The first error message suggests that you may need a newer version of the ActiveX control file. The second message implies that the CAB file could not be found on your server. It's possible that these files were not fully or correctly backed up, or that they didn't restore properly on the customer PC. I'd recommend reviewing your backup and restoration methods closely to ensure all necessary files are included and coming over correctly. You might also consider reinstalling the specific files that are causing error messages, if possible.

It sounds like you've run into a fairly common issue where the backup process might inadvertently alter or miss backing up some ActiveX control files. The error messages indicate that there might be a version discrepancy between the two systems or some essential components are missing. As a start, you could try manually copying the ActiveX files from your developer PC to the customer PC to ensure they're identical. If this doesn't resolve the issue, a full reinstallation of FTView might be necessary, just to ensure there's no corruption somewhere within the software. Remember to perform backups before undertaking any of these steps.

It sounds like you might be dealing with some version incompatibility issues across your systems. Check if there are any updates needed on the customer's PC for their ActiveX control - the error message suggests that a newer version might be required which isn't available on their machine. For the missing CAB file error, you can try manually installing the necessary files from the RSView directory. It may also help to revisit your backup process, ensuring that essential files are not mistakenly left out. Remember to always keep both your developer and customer PCs running on identical versions to avoid these issues in the first place. Good luck!
