I recently came across a problem with FTView v14 and Logix Designer v36 compatibility. It seems that in order to browse v36 ACD files, both software programs need to be installed on the same machine. Despite some previous struggles with the offline tag browser in FTView, I have always managed to work around it. However, this time, I faced more challenges. After seeking assistance from tech support, we discovered that offline tag browsing worked fine with projects up to Studio 5000 v35, but not with v36. Interestingly, the tech support person was able to browse v36 files on a Windows 10 virtual machine, but not on a Windows 11 machine (the same system I was using). This led us to believe that the issue might be Windows-specific. After trying on a Windows 10 virtual machine without success, the tech support person tried again on another Windows 10 virtual machine with only FTView v14 installed (without Logix Designer v36). Surprisingly, he encountered the same problems I did - unable to browse v36 offline tags. Based on this experience, the recommendation was to have both FTView v14 and Logix Designer v36 on the same machine. Despite concerns about conflicts between the two software programs, it was advised that as long as they were versions using the same underlying FT Services Platform, it shouldn't be an issue anymore. It's important to note my past experiences with conflicts and why I prefer to keep FTView separate from Logix Designer. However, it seems that this separation may not be necessary anymore. Cheers, Rob.
Are you experiencing issues with mismatched FactoryTalk Services platform versions on different machines? Fortunately, I have not had to use the offline tag browser yet. Another noteworthy addition in FTView 14 is the prominent display of "14" on the packaging. /s Improved Version: Are you facing compatibility issues due to differing FactoryTalk Services platform versions on separate machines? Fortunately, I have not encountered the need to utilize the offline tag browser. Additionally, a key highlight of FTView 14 is the clear labeling of "14" on the packaging. /s SEO-Friendly Version: Are you encountering problems with mismatched FactoryTalk Services platform versions on multiple machines? Fortunately, I haven't had to resort to using the offline tag browser. Moreover, a standout feature in FTView 14 is the visible "14" displayed on the packaging. /s
I'm uncertain to be honest. This is a new installation on two different machines, both utilizing the services platform v6.4. Unfortunately, I have discovered that the application documenter is not functioning properly either. I regret not waiting before proceeding.
I am amazed that v14 is still available, as I thought ActiveX would no longer be allowed in the IDE after v13. The firmware for the PV+ 7 performance is still at v12.107, and I suspect this is due to ActiveX issues.
Hey Rob, thanks for sharing your experience! It’s frustrating to run into those compatibility issues, especially when you’re relying on the tag browsing feature. I’ve had similar concerns about running different versions of Rockwell software, but it’s good to know that there are newer guidelines suggesting they can coexist without conflicts. Maybe it’s worth giving it another shot and installing both on the same machine to see if it resolves the browsing issue. Let’s hope Rockwell continues to improve compatibility with updates, especially with Windows 11 in the mix!
Hey Rob, thanks for sharing your experience! It’s really interesting how these compatibility issues can vary so much between setups. I’ve always kept FTView and Logix Designer separate myself for peace of mind, but it sounds like the tech support team's recommendation might be worth trying, especially if they’ve confirmed that the underlying services have improved. I wonder if the differences in Windows versions really do play a significant role, since I've heard similar things about software behaving differently on 10 versus 11. Hopefully, you’ll find a setup that works seamlessly for you moving forward! Cheers!
Hey Rob, thanks for sharing your experience! It’s interesting how much compatibility can vary with different software versions and operating systems. Your note about needing both programs on the same machine highlights a common issue many of us face in automation. I’ve had similar frustrations with offline browsing, so it’s good to see you were able to work with tech support to dig deeper. Maybe experimenting with a dual-boot setup could help mitigate those conflicts while still letting you have both programs available? I’m curious to see how this will evolve with future updates. Cheers!
