Troubleshooting High-Speed Counter (HSC) Issue on 2080-LC20 PLC

Question:

Hello, has anyone encountered a problem with the High-Speed Counter (HSC) on the 2080-LC20 PLC? The PLC is being used on a cut off press, and occasionally, after resetting the HSC to zero, it fails to count. We have tried various methods to reset the HSC, but sometimes it gets stuck and requires powering down the PLC to reset it. Please see the attached printout. Any ideas or suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

In all honesty, I have found that the 800 series PLCs and their high-speed functions often encounter issues. When attempting to use the HSC for an encoder, I consistently faced glitches. As a workaround, I opted for lower resolution encoders or developed my own pulse counter logic, albeit with limited success. It is crucial to adjust the scan rate on the input terminal or designate it as high-speed. The specific terminology used in CCW for this escapes me at the moment. Furthermore, it is important to monitor the controller scan rate with these 800 series PLCs, as excessive code can easily slow their operation to the 1/2 - 1 1/2 second range.

Based on the problem you described, it might be a firmware issue with the 2080-LC20 PLC or an overlooked glitch in your programming. I had a similar issue a while back and updating the PLC firmware to the latest version did the trick. If the issue persists, double-check your logic code. A simple mistake, like an incorrect condition in your ladder logic, could cause the HSC to stop counting, even if the PLC doesn't flag an error. It'd help if you could share your ladder logic here for us to scan through it. Do keep us updated on how it goes!

Hey there, I've experienced similar issues before with PLCs. It sounds like there might be a glitch in your PLC's firmware, causing the HSC to occasionally lose functionality. My suggestion would be to ensure that your firmware is up-to-date before proceeding with any hardware troubleshooting. You could also try isolating the issue by using another 2080-LC20 PLC, if one is available, to determine if the problem persists. Connecting with the manufacturer's technical support can shed light on any known issues or fixes too.

It sounds like you're dealing with a tricky issue. When you reset the HSC, are you doing it via the program logic or manually? If it's through the program, you might want to ensure that there is a sufficient delay after resetting before it starts counting again. Fast actions can often cause such issues. Additionally, check whether any other tasks running on the PLC might be causing a resource conflict. It might also be worth revisiting the hardware configuration, perhaps looking at the pulse input settings. Powering down the PLC as a resolution seems to suggest it might be a firmware issue, so you may also consider updating the firmware, if not done recently.
