Troubleshooting Ingersoll Rand MM-250 Compressor Bearing Failures

Question:

Hello, I'm Fahad Qureshi, a Machinery Engineer working for a Chemical Company in Karachi, Pakistan. Our plant utilizes four Ingersoll Rand compressors, model MM-250, for generating Instrument and Plant Air. Unfortunately, we are experiencing frequent bearing failures in these machines and are in need of determining the root cause. We have attempted to reach out to IR Engineers through their local distributor without success. The distributor lacks technical expertise and has been unable to provide any assistance. Any help in establishing contact with IR Engineers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Can you share the URL of the platform where you attempted to contact them?

I attempted to contact the OEM directly through their authorized distributor, who sold me the new airend, but was unsuccessful in reaching them. Despite the distributor's efforts to relay my inquiries, the OEM continuously posed questions and ultimately, after two months, refused to honor the warranty without providing any justification.

Which compressor tests have you conducted?

No tests were conducted. The airend has been swapped out with a new one. However, during the test run, a high level of vibration was discovered and measured using a CSI Analyzer. Upon further analysis of the vibrations, it was determined that the Gas Pulsation Frequency is present.

I came across information online indicating that the machine is designed to withstand temperatures up to 46°C (115°F). Being exposed to direct sunlight outdoors could potentially impact the ambient temperature and performance of the machine.

Hello Fahad, mechanical failures can indeed be frustrating. While I don't personally have any direct contacts at Ingersoll Rand, I can provide you with a few pointers. Have you tried reaching out to IR through their official website or via other social media platforms like LinkedIn? They might be more responsive there. Also, don't hesitate to elevate your issue to their global services if the local distributor isn't much help. In parallel, maybe consider hiring an independent mechanical engineer as they could help determine the root cause of your bearing failures. Happy troubleshooting!

Hi Fahad, it's quite frustrating to not get the technical help you require. While establishing contact with IR directly could prove to be beneficial, it might be also worth considering hiring an independent machinery technician who can have an overall look at the situation. Often bearing failures can be due to misalignment, lubrication issues, or even excessive loads which might not necessarily point to a compressor defect. A fresh pair of eyes might help pinpoint the issue.

Hi Fahad, I can imagine your frustration dealing with this issue. It seems odd that the bearings are failing regularly on equipment from such an established brand like Ingersoll Rand. Like you, I would question whether there might be an underlying issue contributing to the failures. I suggest reaching out directly to Ingersoll Rand via their global customer service, they have offices around the world and can likely get you in touch with a technical expert. In parallel, have you considered the operational conditions which may be contributing to this frequent failure? Things like overloading, improper maintenance, or unsuitable environmental conditions could be potential factors. Hope you can get this resolved soon.

Hi Fahad, it sounds like you're dealing with a complex issue, and I feel your pain over an unresponsive distributor. While I don't have a direct line to Ingersoll Rand, have you considered hiring an independent machinery consultant to help diagnose the problem? These folks often have extensive experience with various machinery models and could potentially identify your bearing failure issue. Additionally, you might want to investigate the lubricant you're using - improper or insufficient lubrication could lead to bearing failures. Meanwhile, keep doggedly pursuing contact with IR directly. Wish you luck, mate!

Hi Fahad! It sounds frustrating to deal with those failures, especially when support is hard to come by. Have you tried reaching out to Ingersoll Rand through their official website or customer service hotline? They often have dedicated technical teams that can help troubleshoot issues like yours. Additionally, you might want to check if there are any user forums or industry groups where others may have faced similar issues with the MM-250. Sometimes, firsthand experiences from other engineers can lead to valuable insights. Good luck!
