Troubleshooting IP Assignment Issues with Rockwell BOOTP/DHCP Server

Question:

Subject: Assistance Needed for IP Assignment Using BOOTP/DHCP Server I am seeking assistance in assigning an IP address to a device using the BOOTP/DHCP server from Rockwell. I have followed the setup instructions and successfully configured the server to send an IP address to a connected device via its MAC address. However, when I attempt to disable BOOTP/DHCP, I encounter an error message stating, "Failed to complete the requested operation..." accompanied by a notification in the status bar that says, "Socket connect failed..." I have verified that all connections are functioning correctly, as the device's MAC address is visible in the BOOTP configuration. Additionally, I have ensured that the IP address and Subnet Mask settings on my laptop match those I am trying to assign to the device (specifically, my laptop is set to 172.16.28.250 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, and I intend to set the device to 172.16.28.255 with the same Subnet Mask). Despite these configurations, I am still facing this issue. Any guidance or solutions for resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Since 2010, I have struggled to get the Rockwell BOOTP/DHCP server functioning properly. As an alternative, I rely on a DHCP router and utilize either the Ethernet/IP driver or the router's web interface to locate the device's IP address.

The Rockwell BOOTP/DHCP utility consistently operates on compatible computers. However, on devices where it fails, functionality is lost. The positive aspect is that you can easily disable the BOOTP/DHCP feature by right-clicking the device within RSLinx Classic and selecting the "Module Configuration" option. This straightforward method enhances your device management experience.

Are you trying to configure the IP address for a specific device? To successfully assign an IP address for the first time, keep in mind that you cannot use an address like 172.16.28.250 unless you are on the 192.168.1.xxx subnet. A good approach is to connect to the device through a switch. When you issue a command to BOOTP to set the IP address, be sure to update your laptop's IP address to match the device's (for example, change it to 172.16.28.250). Once this is done, you should be able to ping the device successfully.

I am looking for guidance on how to set the IP address for the Micro820 controller. Additionally, could you please provide instructions on how to change the Micro820's IP address without using its programming software? Thank you!

**Updating IP Address Using a Micro SD Card** You can effortlessly modify your device's IP address during the boot process by utilizing a Micro SD card and a configuration file named ConfigMeFirst.txt located in the root directory of the card. To proceed, create the ConfigMeFirst.txt file with the following format: ``` [PM][IPA=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx][SNM=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx][END] ``` Here, replace 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' with a valid IP address or subnet mask. After saving the changes, simply reboot the controller. Upon restart, the device will adopt the new IP address and subnet mask specified in the ConfigMeFirst.txt file. It’s essential to note that if your controller is password-protected, you will need the password to access the programming interface. In cases where the password is forgotten, the only way to regain access is by performing a firmware flash, which unfortunately will result in the loss of the existing configuration and program data. By following these steps, you can easily update your device's network settings while ensuring a seamless operation.
