Troubleshooting Unsupported Encoding Format Error When Importing AOIs

Question:

Hello everyone, I have limited experience with servos and servo drives. Currently, we are implementing Kinetix 5100 servo drives for a new project. I am in the process of setting up the system to begin testing. I encountered issues with the AOI/AOP from Rockwell. Despite successfully adding the User-Defined data types from the AOI file, I encountered an error ("Unsupported Encoding Format") when trying to import an AOI. Any insights on what might be causing this issue? Details of the system are as follows: PLC - CompactLogix 5370 (1769-L18ER-BB1B), rev. 24.13, Controls Software - Logix Designer ver. 24.02, Drive - Kinetix 5100 Servo Drives, AOI - Ver. 2.01.01, AOP - Ver. 2.01.17, Drive Software - KNX5100C ver. 4.0. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that I am mistaken, but I do not believe that controller is equipped for motion.

I am of the opinion that it ought to be, as Rockwell/AB has stated that it is.

I need to review some details before proceeding with the update.

Check out page 4 of the document from Rockwell Automation to learn more about the motion capabilities of the 1769-L18ERM-BB1B.

This company does not belong to the M brand.

It sounds like you've already done a great job troubleshooting. The "Unsupported Encoding Format" error can sometimes be chalked up to a software version conflict. Ensure that the versions of Logix Designer, AOI, AOP and the Kinetix software you're utilizing are compatible with each other. You may have to either upgrade or downgrade one or more of your softwares to ensure compatibility. If the problem persists despite this, you might want to consider getting directly in touch with Rockwell Automation. Their support team might provide you more specific guidance given the details of your setup. Good luck!

Hey there, I've faced a similar issue before. Most likely, it's a compatibility problem due to the firmware version of your CompactLogix 5370 PLC. The AOI/AOP you're attempting to import may be designed for a later version of the PLC firmware. My recommendation would be to either update your PLC's firmware to a newer version or try finding an AOI/AOP that is compatible with your PLC's existing firmware. Just remember, any changes made should be well-documented and thoroughly tested to ensure system functionality is not compromised. Good luck!

Hi there! I've faced a similar situation in the past. It sounds like there might be a version compatibility issue. Always ensure your AOI, AOP, Drive Software, and Logix Designer versions are compatible with the firmware of your PLC. I found that Rockwell has a compatibility checker on their website that could be helpful. You might also want to consider updating your system if possible because some of the older versions can lead to several undocumented issues. Lastly, there might be lingering remnants of previous AOIs that have not been completely deleted. Check in 'Controller Organiser' to make sure. Hope this helps!

It sounds like you're running into a compatibility issue with the AOI/AOP versions and your Logix Designer software. Since your Logix Designer version (24.02) is earlier than the AOP (2.01.17) you're trying to import, that could be causing the "Unsupported Encoding Format" error. I’d recommend checking Rockwell's documentation to ensure that the AOP is compatible with your version of the software. Sometimes updating your Logix Designer to match or exceed the AOP version can resolve these conflicts. Also, double-check that you're using the correct data types specified in the AOI; any mismatch can lead to frustrating errors. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted out soon!
