Troubleshooting Vibrations in Finish Mill Stand Gearboxes

Question:

We have observed a 1x vibration in the gearboxes of our Finish Mill Stand. While a broken or cracked gear tooth is a common cause for this issue, upon inspection we did not find any signs of damage in the gearbox we opened. Similar vibrations have been reported in other stands, both at our facility and at other locations. Have you encountered this issue before and what are your thoughts on the possible causes?

Are you able to share some data related to gearbox vibrations? It is quite uncommon to find a gearbox that does not exhibit any 1X vibrations. The amplitude of these vibrations is significant. Have you looked into issues with alignment, the type of coupling being used, and how it behaves? You may find more helpful insights by posting your query in a vibration-related forum, such as the one found at https://www.maintenance.org/for...on-alignment-balance.

The effects of 1x impacts can be clearly seen in the time domain, but are not as prominent in spectral data analysis.

Please see the attached images capturing data in the vertical plane, showing the impact of turning speed on the bottom pinion output shaft. This shaft features two gears - a 51T Bull driven by the motor input pinion, and a 28T gear that pairs with a top pinion of the same size to drive the rolls effectively.
