Unable to Delete Tags in RSLogix 5000 Version 20.01 – How to Fix Greyed Out Delete Tag Issue

Question:

Hello, I am currently using RSLogix 5000 Version 20.01 and have successfully created a program that is functioning as intended. However, I am encountering an issue where I am unable to delete any tags within the software. The options to Cut and Delete are grayed out in the context menu. While I am able to add new tags and modify existing ones, I am unable to delete any Controller or Program Tags. Has anyone else experienced this issue before? Thank you, John.

To enable the "Delete" option in the tag editor, make sure to click on the small box located on the far left side of the row. Once selected, you will be able to delete the tag successfully.

Madisjc shared: Greetings! I am currently utilizing RSLogix 5000 Version 20.01 and have successfully created a basic program that functions as intended. However, I am experiencing difficulty in deleting tags as the software seems to restrict me from doing so. Despite being able to add new tags and modify existing ones, the options to Cut and Delete are unavailable in the context menu for Controller or Program Tags. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Thank you, John. Expanding on this, I'd like to express my gratitude for your previous post, which proved to be incredibly helpful. I encountered a similar issue while working on RS Logix Studio 30 and discovered that I needed to highlight the entire line before being able to delete it. Although this aspect of the user interface can be frustrating, I'm relieved that it was a straightforward resolution.

Have you accidentally deleted your code (ladder)? Make sure not to use the variables that were deleted.

I am experiencing issues with Logix Designer V36 where I am unable to delete tags in the Parameters and local tags section of the main program. While I can successfully add tags, the deletion function is not working as intended within Tasks --> main task --> Main program.

Are you operating without a valid license? Occasionally, my FactoryTalk Activation Manager may encounter issues retrieving a license, resulting in the ability to open a program but restrictions on making any changes. Additionally, you may not be able to delete tags if they are linked in the program. Make sure to double-check for any references to the tag you wish to delete to ensure it is not in use.

Hi John! I’ve run into that issue before; it can be really frustrating. One thing I found helpful was to check if the project is in a locked state or if the tag is currently being used somewhere in your program, as that might prevent deletion. Try closing and reopening the project, or even restarting RSLogix 5000 to see if that resets any stuck permissions. If all else fails, you might want to check the software settings to ensure there aren’t any restrictions in place. Hope that helps!
