Understanding IOLink Register Assignments in Controllogix PLC with IFM Efector AL1920 Master

Question:

Hello everyone, I have a Controllogix PLC linked to an IFM Efector AL1920 IOLink master, with all eight ports set up for IO-Link mode. Currently, only port X01 is connected to an AL2325 16-point expansion module. In Studio 5000, the AL2325 outputs are controlled through register "_Master:O1.Data[24]", while inputs are received on "_Master:I1.Data[96]". I am curious about why these specific registers are assigned for this setup. It seems like each port on the AL1920 should have its own set of registers, but how are they allocated and which registers correspond to which ports? Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

While I may not be considered an expert in IO Link technology (having only used it once), my understanding is that the register assignment is typically controlled by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the device. It is recommended that the OEM provides an IOD file for this purpose.

The registers of the AL1920 and AL2325 devices are determined by two protocols: E/IP for communication with the Master and IO-Link for data exchange. The manual for the AL1920 will provide information on the location of Port x01 process data within the E/IP protocol. On the other hand, the IODD file for the AL2325 device will illustrate how the process data is mapped. You can easily view this information using the free IODD viewer from IO-Link, whether you prefer the user-friendly interface or prefer to access the raw XML data.

Get your hands on the newest ifm startup bundle for easy access to all ifm-related data on your IOLMs. Simply import the provided file to quickly document and organize all information. Make sure to match the IOLM names with their corresponding entries in your logix controller's database. The configuration file includes essential port assignment details for seamless integration.
