I am searching for information about latency in time stamping for signals from LV motor feeder to DCS, specifically focusing on the difference between time stamping added by a gateway converting Modbus TCP to IEC 61850 and the native timestamping from the protection relay. This comparison is crucial for optimizing communication efficiency and ensuring accurate data transmission.
Latency issues can arise depending on the gateway being used and the poll rate set, resulting in delays of several seconds. Unfortunately, with Modbus TCP, there are no known options for timestamping data at the motor feeder. One workaround is to continuously poll data from the LV motor feeder at the maximum rate supported by the gateway (usually around 0.1 seconds) and enable change of state (COS) for gateway signals to the DCS. This way, when the IEC 61850 section timestamps a change, the DCS can display the most up-to-date timestamp possible. However, be aware that this method will increase network traffic between the gateway and the LV motor feeder. Alternatively, consider upgrading the interface for your LV motor feeder to DNP over Ethernet. This could enable your DCS to display timestamps from DNP, potentially resolving the timestamping issue.

Answer: - Time stamping is essential for accurate data transmission and synchronization between different devices in the network.
Answer: - The gateway adds a timestamp during the protocol conversion process, while the protection relay provides a native timestamp directly from the device.
Answer: - Latency can affect the accuracy of data transmission and synchronization between devices, highlighting the importance of minimizing delays for efficient communication.
Answer: - Optimizing latency ensures real-time data transmission, improves system reliability, and enhances the overall performance of the communication network.
Answer: - Factors such as accuracy, synchronization requirements, communication protocol compatibility, and network efficiency should be evaluated when deciding between gateway and protection relay timestamps.
