Understanding RSLogix 5000: Why integer.1 and integer.[1] Are Interchangeable

Question:

Why are the tag names "integer.1" and "integer.[1]" considered interchangeable in RSLogix 5000? When working with integer elements, the presence or absence of brackets around the bit number does not affect their functionality. I'm intrigued by this design choice. Thank you!

In programming, the value of Integer.1 must be a fixed address, while Integer.[index+1] has the flexibility to represent an expression.

User "AustralIan" remarked: "Integer.1 can exclusively represent a fixed address, while Integer.[index+1] allows for an expression." Upon reflection, I understand this better now. Many of my fellow developers adopt both approaches, even for fixed addresses. To simplify maintenance for our technicians, I plan to establish a guideline prohibiting brackets for fixed address components. Thank you for the clarification!
